Ho prenotato Red River per la famiglia perché era pubblicizzato come "adatto ai principianti". Sono passati 10 anni o più dall'ultima volta che qualcuno in famiglia ha sciato, e avevamo un bambino di 8 anni alle prime armi. La costosissima scuola di sci per bambini era pubblicizzata come eccellente. L'istruttore di mio nipote, Brian, ha trascorso la maggior parte del tempo a parlare con loro mentre imparavano a stare fermi sugli sci. Sono saliti solo con il breve skilift mobile. A fine giornata, aveva sciato pochissimo. Quando abbiamo chiesto informazioni sullo skilift, Brian ha detto che non sono arrivati agli impianti finché i bambini non hanno frequentato la scuola di sci per 3 giorni (per un totale di 750 dollari). Voglio sicurezza, non inerzia. Al contrario, 30 anni fa, suo padre, a 7 anni, ha preso lezione all'Angel Fire. A mezzogiorno era già in montagna e ha iniziato a sciare come un pesce nell'acqua.
Inoltre, Red River ha solo una manciata di piste vere e proprie, a meno che non si vada sul versante posteriore della montagna. Sebbene quella zona sia eccellente e abbia molte vere piste verdi, l'unica discesa dalla montagna è una pista blu pubblicizzata come tale. Persino i bravi sciatori del nostro gruppo hanno avuto difficoltà, e non so se mia nuora scierà mai più. Evito Taos per questo motivo: ci sono solo due discese: una dove si scia con i bastoncini per sempre e una come questa, ripida e impegnativa per un vero principiante. Consiglierei di andare ad Angel Fire se si vuole soggiornare nel New Mexico o a Copper se si desidera un bel gruppo di montagne che segreghi gli sciatori e sia sicuro per tutti.

Era la prima volta che sciavo qui. Volevo provarlo. Niente attese. Molte piste diverse. Tanta neve. Tanti cartelli per le piste, quindi sapevi dove andare. Posto più piccolo, quindi meno affollato. Più facile da girare. Ci tornerò sicuramente. Comodo chiosco per acquistare i biglietti per gli impianti di risalita.

Great size mountain for a family with kids of different ages and abilities. Got a good snow early in the week that made for great conditions. Had a wonderful visit and will definitely be back!

My mother-in-law had a cabin here for years. We did more cross-country skiing, but did do some downhill. The mountain would be a good one to learn on, but a more experienced skier will soon be bored. Unfortunately spring skiing is hit-or-miss because of the lower elevation. The town itself is really boring, just a few restaurants, none of which are very good, and no apres ski scene to speak of. Taos Ski Valley is better in every way.

This is a great little ski resort, and the town has everything you want. You have to understand this is not a large resort like Winter Park. It is much smaller. But the trade off is a lot less people. While the town is full and vibrant during the peak season, there are never long lift lines. But the town has great shops, friendly people, and a great selection of restaurants. The mountain does not have a lot of exceptional terrain, but it has a variety of blue and green runs for all levels of skiers to enjoy. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed. By the way, I recommend going to Colorado for spring break skiing. It is usually pretty warm in New Mexico at that time and the snow can be sparse and/or slushy at that time.

We've been skiing Taos, Purgatory, Angel Fire and Ski Apache for the last ten+ years. Mostly at Taos and Purgatory, only trying the others once. Red River is a nice mountain when they have snow. Not much snow at Spring Break this year. I don't know about other years. Spring Break can be funny, weather wise. We've been in blizzards and deserts, this year at Red River a desert. We skied three days. It got pretty slushy early. Some runs should have been closed but were not. Lots of exposed grass, stumps and...well, no snow. They do a pretty good job of bringing the mountain back up to speed by morning, but this spring break just didn't have enough snow for me. Coming down the top lift by 11:00 had big mixture of slush. I'm sure it's great when there is snow, I did see lots of people enjoying themselves. We left early our last day.

This is a great little ski mountain when they have snow (middle of winter, early spring) I have only been here once, mainly since I am an expert skier and usually end up at nearby Taos, the mecca of steep. But, I was glad I came because Red River has some great medium-steep runs too. I consider it best for beginner and advanced skiers. The beginner area at the base is fairly large, and there is another whole beginner area up at the top of the mountain! It is a little unusual the way they have it split up into little areas each served by its own short lift, but that makes it great for families with children. Your children would have to try really hard to get lost on this mountain! This is one of the few ski areas in NM with a town right at the base, ski-in, ski-out.
