Sandia Peak Ski Area, a family mountain just 30 minutes from Albuquerque, offers up long and scenic cruising trails. It's right in the Cibola National Forest and the view from the 10,378 foot summit covers about 11,000 square miles. One of the word's longest trams will take you there, running almost three miles from the outskirts of Albuquerque Terrain Four chairlifts, a poma, and a mighty-mite serve a respectable 1700 feet of vertical and 200 acres of terrain. A few black diamonds sprinkle the trail map, but with the exception of Diablo they are rather short. But the blue-square cruising terrain can't be beat, with many of the trails running top-to-bottom. A lot of the green circle trails do also. Snowboarding is allowed at the area on all trails, but there are no terrain parks or a half pipe. Rentals and lessons are available daily. There is a special program, Cubby Corner, for younger children. Telemark lessons are also available. Cross-country skiers can enjoy 47 km of public trails in the Cibola National Forest, most of them at high elevation. The trail network may be accessed via Tram or via Highway 536 to the top. The base lodge offers a cafeteria and outdoor grill and features expansive views. The High Finance restaurant at the summit offers a full-service bar, lunch, and for tram riders, dinner. It specializes in steaks, seafood, prime rib, and stunning views. Off-slope Fun The presence of Albuquerque a half hour or so away means there are numerous lodging, dining, and shopping options available, as well as galleries, museums, and a number of other attractions.
