Red River is one of only a handful of North American alpine resorts where you can slide from the slopes right into town. In fact 90% of the lodging in town is within walking distance of the slopes; lodging a bit further away is served by a free trolley-style bus. Two of the resort's six chairs rise right from town. Terrain Red River's annual allotment of natural snow is a respectable 18-plus feet. But the resort can make snow on 87% of its 270 acres. Factor in 1600 feet of vertical and abundant New Mexico sunshine to complete the picture. Two triples, four doubles, and a magic carpet serve almost 60 named trails. Especially fun for families is The Backside, a collection of green and easier blue trails, which feature a number of "secret places" for kids to enjoy. Here you'll also find Moonstar Mining Camp, a ski-through replica of an old mining camp. With 70% of the terrain devoted to beginners and intermediates it's no wonder that more than a third of lift ticket sales are for guests 15 and under. But there are a few steeper runs like Cat Skinner and Bumps R Us for the more advanced skier or rider. Off-slope Fun The little town at the base of the mountain, Red River, is authentically Western and shows its mining tradition. Its few hundred souls take full advantage of their high-altitude valley and the surrounding mountains. The namesake river which parallels much of the main street is clean and well-stocked with trout. The nearby Carson National Forest and Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area draw increasing numbers of year 'round tourists. New Mexico's largest cross-country facility, Enchanted Forest, is just a few miles down the road. Taos is 40 miles away by road.
