Located near Rumford in the Longfellow Mountains of western Maine, Black Mountain has been providing affordable family skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, and tubing for more than 40 years. It is now part of the Maine Winter Sports Center (MWSC) family, which includes Bigrock in Aroostook County and a number of cross-country facilities. MWSC plans a 40% increase in vertical serviced by a double chair in the near future, along with additional snowmaking and lighting. Geared toward learning and fun, Black provides lessons and clinics and a citizen racing program all season long. Special events enliven the long winter, there's a lift-served tubing park, and 25 kilometers of cross-country trails. Terrain Black Mountain of Maine may look like a small ski area, but it has the feel of a much larger mountain, with a1150 foot vertical drop. The Upper and Lower Androscoggin trails making a challenging, "solid blue" intermediate run that is nearly a mile long If you want variety, there are twenty trails served by two chair lifts, a T-bar and a handle tow. The terrain park features a 300 foot-long half pipe with 12-foot walls, two grind rails, a table, a spine and several rolls. The Moose Run beginner area (open weekends, always free) and the novice area are great places to learn and play. The varied and challenging trails, along with breathtaking views make Black Mountain of Maine fun to explore and ski the first time, and every time, you visit. For over 30 years Black Mountain has been acknowledged as one of the finest Nordic skiing facilities for recreation and racing in North America. Black Mountain's 25 kilometers of trails were developed by Rumford's Chummy Broomhall, a two-time Olympian and designer of the Squaw Valley and Lake Placid Olympic cross-country trails. These same trails were the site of the 2003 and 2004 Chevrolet US Cross Country Championships. Black Mountain's Nordic trails have something to offer for all abilities. The trails are 15 feet wide and are groomed, whenever possible, for both skating and classic techniques. Snowshoeing is encouraged. Four kilometers are protected by snowmaking. Teaching programs are available for all levels, including an innovative parent and pre-school program.
