Sweden is one of the world’s leading ski nations with thousands of years of history of cross-country skiing (Still very important here) because of the nature of the country and hundreds of small ski areas dotted all around the country.
The most famous ski resorts in Sweden are Åre, Sälen, Idre Fjäll and Isaberg, where there are excellent conditions for alpine skiing and snowboarding. Åre was host to the 2007 Alpine Skiing World Championships and usually stages ski competitions and events right in to May.
With the opening of the large bridges between Denmark and Sweden, day-trips from the Continent have also become very popular, and many Danes use both bridges and ferries to get to the Swedish mountains.
For them the most obvious destinations are naturally the southernmost ski resorts, which also often are open in the evening. Since the southern part of Sweden is on the same latitude as Denmark the weather is often mild, and it may be wise to check the snow conditions before setting off.
That’s not so often the case 1500km north where Riksgransen is one of the resorts that doesn’t really start its ski season until February as it is so cold and dark in the Arctic Circle up in December and January it is not so great for a ski holiday. However it stays open in to June with 24 hour daylight from late May.
